The North End Family Award for Indigenous Students
UPDATE: Thanks to the generous support of donors, the North End Family Award has continued to reach new fundraising heights! After previously increasing the goal to $8,000, the award has since raised an incredible $11,000 from community members looking to provide for students coming from Winnipeg's North End. Raising over $10,000 in funding means this important award can begin life as an endowed fund at the University and support students in perpituity. Thank you once again for your help so far and please continue to share this initiative with those looking to give!
Established in 2015, this award is given annually to the Indigenous student with the highest admission average entering The University of Winnipeg from a high school in Winnipeg's North End. In addition to the award, the recipient also receives a copy of Katherena Vermette's anthology "North End Love Songs".
Created by UWinnipeg graduate Erica Moodie (’00) and named by poet and author Katherena Vermette, this award reflects a commitment to Winnipeg and youth in the North End. Moodie grew up in the North End and returns often. She is now a Professor of Biostatistics at McGill University, a William Dawson Scholar, and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. She credits her dedication as a mentor to the outstanding support and inspiration she received from her family of statisticians and her undergraduate mentors at the University of Winnipeg.
About “North End Love Songs”:
“North End Love Songs” discusses some very hard things – sexual exploitation, depression, shame, missing relatives, loss and grief. The book also talks about strength, resilience, survival beyond victimization and some of the beautiful things I’ve found in our amazing community, so even though it goes to some tough places, it doesn’t stay there too long. – Katherena Vermette
This scholarship celebrates the strength and resilience of youth in the North End. The University of Winnipeg is grateful to all who give back to our campus and Winnipeg’s North End through this meaningful award. We appreciate all who chose to contribute to this fund. You are making a real difference in the lives of students.
Thank you for your support!
