In memory of the late Vasyl (Bill) Balan who passed away on March 11, 2022, and in recognition of his tremedous legacy at UWinnipeg and good works locally and abroad, The University of Winnipeg has established the Vasyl (Bill) Balan International Students from Ukraine Bursary.
Bill started at the University in 2006 as the Associate Vice-President, Operations and later became the Vice President Finance and Administration. At various points, he also held responsibility for External Affairs, Capital Planning and Strategic Initiatives.
Having faithfully served two presidents, Bill retired from The University of Winnipeg on March 31, 2017.
Bill was a great champion for the University and played a key role in its evolution. Bill was also an integral member of the University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation (UWCRC) and was one of its founding board members. Those who knew Bill will remember him fondly as a mentor and friend. He was skilled at building teams and was warm and authentic leader. His holiday parties were the stuff of legend.
Among his enduring accomplishments, Bill played a leadership role in the construction of the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, the UWSA Daycare expansion, the Buhler Building, Merchants Corner, Leatherdale Hall, Axworthy RecPlex, AnX construction / renovation, and UWCRC projects including the Downtown Commons, Muse Flats, and West Broadway Commons.
Bill was passionate about Ukraine and worked tirelessly to establish connections between The University of Winnipeg and his family’s homeland. Bill’s dedication to peace and student opportunities is a guiding light for us in dark times.
The University will honour Bill’s legacy by matching donations to the Vasyl (Bill) Balan International Students from Ukraine Bursary, up to a total contribution of $25,000.
