UPDATE: We are happy to announce that we have surpassed our original goal of $1,500 thanks to the generosity of students, faculty, staff and friends of the Classics Department at The University of Winnipeg! Thanks to this success, we have decided to endow the monies raised so that we can offer the New Directions Lecture series in perpetuity, and we hope that we can continue to raise money to build the endowment so that we can afford to bring in several speakers in each year. With this in mind, we are stretching our original goal to $15,000.00. Thank you for your support.
New Directions in Classics is a hugely successful speaker series held each year by the Department of Classics at the University of Winnipeg. The series has featured local, national and international speakers on a range of engaging topics - right here in Downtown Winnipeg!
Please help support this free, publicly-accessible, engaging lecture series that has already entertained and educated hundreds of staff, faculty, students, and community members.
We believe that bringing in speakers from Canada and around the world is central to the University’s mission as a hub for knowledge mobilization, innovation, and accessibility in Downtown Winnipeg. We’re excited to work with staff, donors, and the community to create a permanent, self-sustaining, and free lecture series that will bring the best new perspectives on the ancient world. Examples include new research on Indigenous writing in Latin; comparative studies of the experience of refugee women in antiquity and today; an exploration of an ancient piece of technology, the Antikythera Mechanism; or the gender biases in Wikipedia’s coverage of ancient history.
We’re starting small and asking for donations to support one speaker from Canada per year. Your donations will support airfare and accommodations. We’re committed to bringing in the best academics in Canada, doing the most cutting-edge, most relevant, and most publicly-accessible research in the country.
Your donation – however small – will help make Downtown Winnipeg a hub for Classics research and a centre for the public delivery of the highest-quality lectures and public talks.
